Application requirements:

A minimum of 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale is required by The Graduate School for admittance. The undergraduate work should have been in Animal Science, Range Science or a closely related field. A faculty member must agree to advise a student before they will be accepted into the Animal and Range Sciences department. Acceptance to the MSU Animal and Range Sciences department does not imply automatic acceptance to The Graduate School at MSU. Financial support in the form of research assistantships and/or tuition and fee waivers is limited and will be awarded on a competitive basis

The department does not require a GRE; however, specific faculty advisors may request a GRE as a condition of accepting an advisee.

All applicants must upload unofficial transcripts during this online process, even if you are currently working on your degree. If accepted, MSU must receive official transcripts directly from all university(s) attended. Transcripts should be sent electronically to animalrange@montana.edu or mailed to MSU, Animal and Range Sciences, P.O. Box 172900, 103 Animal Bioscience Building, Bozeman, MT  59717-2900.

Three reference letters, one must be from the intended major professor

A complete domestic application package must be received by the department by the following dates and International applications are due one month prior:

  • For admission Fall semester - June 1
  • For admission Spring semester - November 1
  • For admission Summer semester - March 1
