B.S. in Health Enhancement (Health & Physical Education) K-12
The undergraduate Bachelor of Science in Health Enhancement (Health & Physical Education) K-12 is designed for students who wish to become licensed to teach health and physical education in grades K-12 in both public and private schools. Health Enhancement (Health & Physical Education) K-12 majors are prepared to become certified K-12 Health& Physical Education teachers by learning how to teach children the knowledge and skills needed to move with confidence and competence in a wide variety of physical activities. Through a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on experiences, students gain strategies to foster personal and social skills essential for lifelong enjoyment of physical activity while also learning how to promote health and fitness through cooperative and fitness games, team and individual sports, and lifetime activities. The Health Enhancement (Health & Physical Education) K-12 program is dedicated to developing professionals who can deliver diverse, high-quality programs that encourage self-directed, responsible, and physically active lifestyles, particularly among school-aged children and youth in rural areas across the state and region. Committed to excellence in learning, leadership, and stewardship, the program ensures students are educated to the highest standards through both academic coursework and practical teaching experiences. Graduates of this program can expect to apply their content and foundational knowledge to plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with local, state and SHAPE America National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Health and Physical Education through the effective use of resources, accommodations, modifications, technology, and metacognitive strategies to address the diverse needs of all students.
Upon completion of the degree, students are eligible for licensure in the state of Montana. Students in this program are also prepared to work in a variety of health-related areas such as coaching, health promotion and wellness, recreational and sport administration, community health coordinator, fitness club manager, and more.

Students must receive a grade of "C" or higher in all required courses as outlined in the major. A 3.0 GPA is required to enter the Teacher Education Program and to student teach.
Program Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate effective communication and pedagogical skills, utilize strategies to enhance student engagement and learning, and create appropriate managerial rules and routines in order to create a safe effective learning environment in both physical education and health education.
- apply content and foundational knowledge to plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with local, state and SHAPE America National Standards and Grade-Level Outcomes for K-12 Physical Education and Health through the effective use of resources, accommodations, and/or modifications, technology and metacognitive strategies to address the diverse needs of all students.
- select and implement appropriate assessments and reflect on data from the assessment to monitor students’ progress and guide decision making related to instruction and learning.
- demonstrate behaviors essential to becoming effective professionals. They exhibit professional ethics and culturally competent practices; seek opportunities for continued professional development; and demonstrate knowledge of promotion/advocacy strategies for physical education, health and expanded physical activity opportunities that support the development of physically literate individuals (National Standards for Initial Physical Education Teacher Education, 2017, SHAPE America).
- Teaching certification in Montana is issued by the Office of Public Instruction. Students who successfully complete the Health Enhancement program at Montana State University are eligible to receive a recommendation for the applicable teaching certification in the state of Montana. All Health Enhancement graduates are encouraged to apply for Montana certification upon completion of their degree
