COA 205  Introduction to Coaching: 3 Credits (3 Lec)

(F, Sp, Su) Introductory coaching course which will cover basic information from the beginning level in the American Coach Effectiveness Program.

  1. Explain introductory theories and concepts associated with sport coaching.
  2. Describe and explore the development of a sport coaching philosophy.
  3. Identify sources of evidence-based information in sport and coaching.
  4. Implement research associated with sport and coaching to introductory concepts of sport coaching.

COA 330  Coaching Theory: 3 Credits (3 Lec)

PREREQUISITE: COA 205. (F) This course provides an in-depth exploration of sport coaching theory, focusing on both team and individual sports. Students will analyze key coaching principles, strategies, and leadership techniques while learning to apply these concepts in real-world scenarios

COA 395  Practicum: Coaching Application: 1-2 Credits (1-2 Lec)

PREREQUISITE: COA 205 with a grade of at least a "C", declared Coaching minor, and consent of instructor. (F, Sp, Su) Assignment of prospective coaches to specific sports. Discussion and feedback on planning and implementation in practical setting
Repeatable up to 3 credits.

  1. Identify and select coaching concepts and theories to implement in self-selected sport environment.
  2. Implement concepts, theory, and skills in sport coaching in a sport environment.
  3. Examine through reflection the skills and lessons learned through the application of sport coaching in a sport environment.
  4. Apply and analyze communication skills used when coaching in a sport environment.

COA 405  Advanced Concepts in Coaching: 3 Credits (3 Lec)

PREREQUISITE: COA 205 with a grade of at least a "C" or consent of instructor. (F, Sp, Su) The class is intended for student in the MSU coaching minor and/or experienced coaches who wish to examine current issues in coaching such as dealing with athletes with concussions, coaching the female athlete, emphasizing sportsmanship and ethics in sport, or coach/parent relationships in detail

  2. Analyze risk management procedures in sport environments.
  3. Construct and analyze a coaching program for athletes and teams.
  4. Critique and apply research in sport and coaching.

COA 567  Professional Issues in Coaching: 3 Credits (3 Lec)

PREREQUISITE: COA 205, COA 395 or three years of successful coaching in public schools. (Su) In depth examination of at least one sub-topic from the Montana High School Coach Certification curriculum that is, prevention, care and rehabilitation of injuries, risk management in sport; sociological and psychological aspects of coaching; coaching the female athlete
