ECP- Emergency Care
ECP 100 First Aid and CPR: 1 Credits (1 Lec)
(Sp) Obtain certification in Adult, child and infant CPR/AED and First Aid. Includes CPR/AED/First Aid certification card, blood borne pathogens training, and additional health/safety education in accordance to industry standard.
Repeatable up to 3 credits.

- Demonstrate the process of perform scene, primary, and secondary surveys
- Demonstrate how to obtain a medical history appropriate for patient’s ability to respond
- Demonstrate how to obtain and monitor signs of basic body functions
- Demonstrate how to establish and maintain an airway
- Demonstrate how to utilize an automated external defibrillator (AED) according to current accepted practice protocols
- Demonstrate CPR on an infant, child, and adult mannequin
- Demonstrate the appropriate procedures for cleaning, and dressing of wounds, identifying when referral is necessary
- Demonstrate appropriate cervical stabilization devices and techniques
- Demonstrate the proper positioning and immobilization of a patient with a suspected spinal cord injury
- Demonstrate how and when to use an auto-injectable epinephrine in the management of allergic anaphylaxis
- Demonstrate how to recognize musculoskeletal injuries and how to select appropriate splinting material to stabilize an injured body part
- Demonstrate how to use an AED
ECP 102 Wilderness First Aid: 1 Credits (1 Lab)
(F, Sp) This course covers the fundamentals of emergency care in a non-urban environment, including physiology, injury assessment, short term care, anatomy, and small group rescues. While much of the material appears to be standard emergency care information, the backcountry emphasis with long-term care and evacuation complications makes this course unique.

- Provide students with the skills and knowledge of prevention, assessment, and treatment for an ill or injured person in an environment where definitive care is not available.
- Develop an understanding of how wilderness first aid might enrich one’s social, economic/financial, physical, emotional/spiritual, and/or intellectual well-being.
- Introduce a repeatable framework that you can use consistently in Wilderness Medicine.
ECP 103 Basic Lifeguard Training: 2 Credits (1 Lec, 1 Lab)
(Sp) Obtain certification in Lifeguarding, Professional Rescuer, CPR/AED and First Aid. Includes certification card and additional health/safety education in accordance to industry standard.
Repeatable up to 2 credits.

- Describe behaviors of distressed swimmers, active and passive drowning victims, and near drowning victims
- Recognize an aquatic emergency
- Understand the role of a professional rescuer
- Demonstrate rescue, first aid, CPR, skills
- Obtain a 2-year American Red Cross lifeguard certification after successfully completing skills tests
ECP 122 Wilderness First Responder: 2 Credits (1 Lec, 1 Lab)
(Sp, Su) Wilderness First Responder covers the fundamentals of emergency care in a non-urban environment, including physiology, injury assessment, short term and long-term care, anatomy, and small group rescues. Wilderness First Responder is a nationally recognized standard for wilderness medicine for outdoor industry professionals in the United States. Students who pass this course will earn a Wilderness First Responder Certificate that is good for 2 years.

- Identify and understand basic human anatomy and physiology
- Understand the impact of illness and injury on body systems and on long term patient care
- Demonstrate thorough patient assessment skills and appropriate emergency care measures (splinting, treatment for medical emergencies, prevention and care of frostbite and hypothermia, etc) in complex non-urban environments with limited tools available. ;
- Identify the differences between emergency medicine in an urban and wilderness setting
- Developing and understanding of how Wilderness First Responder might enrich one's social, economic/financial, physical, emotional/spiritual, and or intellectual well-being
ECP 123 Wilderness First Responder Recertification: 1 Credits (1 Lab)
(F) Wilderness First Responder covers the fundamentals of emergency care in a non-urban environment, including physiology, injury assessment, short term and long-term care, anatomy, and small group rescues. Wilderness First Responder is a nationally recognized standard for wilderness medicine for outdoor industry professionals in the United States. The wilderness first responder recertification course allows students to keep their certification valid and skills sharp through practice and application. This course is meant to be re-taken every 1-2 years. Successful candidates would leave the course with an extension to their Wilderness First Responder Certificate that is good for an additional 2 years.
