- Develop solution methods (either analytical or computational) for properly specified boundary value problems.
EM 555 Granular Mechanics: 3 Credits (2 Lec, 1 Lab)
PREREQUISITE: Graduate standing in college of engineering or consent of instructor. (Fa) This course introduces the mechanics of granular materials such as snow, sand, and gravel. Students examine solid-like and fluid-like behaviors through theory, laboratory methods, and modeling, covering granulometry, packing, contact forces, stress, elasticity, plasticity, failure, and flow
View Course Outcomes:
- Explain and interpret mechanics concepts as they apply to granular media (e.g. contact forces, packing, elasticity, and plasticity).
- Summarize and describe common laboratory methods used in granular mechanics (e.g. granulometry, volume fraction measurement, particle tracking, and particle image velocimetry) and analyze provided datasets using these methods.
- Implement numerical techniques (e.g. discrete element method and material point method), systematically vary model parameters, and compare parameter effects within a method and across different methods.
- Formulate and investigate a granular-mechanics question relevant to their research interest.
