MSL 101 Introduction to the Army: 3 Credits (2 Lec, 1 Lab)
(F) MSL 101 focuses on introduction to the Army and basic Soldier skills. It introduces students to the Army and the Profession of Arms. Students will examine the Army Profession and what it means to be a professional in the U.S. Army. The overall focus is on developing basic knowledge and comprehension of the Army Leadership Requirements Model while gaining a complete understanding of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, its purpose in the Army, and its advantages for the student. Students also learn to perform basic Soldier skills to survive in a field environment to support their development as an Army leader. Included is a weekly lab facilitated by MS III Cadets, supervised by MS IV’s and Cadre.

MSL 102 Foundations of Leadership: 3 Credits (2 Lec, 1 Lab)
(Sp) MSL 102 continues the introduction to the Army and basic Soldier skills from MSL 101, and further develops the concepts of the Profession of Arms. Students will dive deeper into the philosophy of the Army as a profession and what it means to be a professional in the U.S. Army. MSL 102 introduces students to the personal challenges and competencies that are critical for effective leadership. Students learn how the personal development of life skills such as critical thinking, performance and resilience enhancement skills, and communication will benefit them throughout their life and career. Students learn the basics of the communications process and the importance for leaders to develop the essential skills to effectively communicate in the Army. Students will begin learning the basics of squad level tactics that will be reinforced during a weekly lab facilitated by MS III Cadets, supervised by MS IVs and Cadre.

MSL 106 Army Physical Fitness: 1 Credits (1 Lab)
(F, Sp) MSG 106 is designed to provide students a framework of fitness skills, planning and testing for a lifetime of health. The course consists of three Physical Training sessions per/week that include running, swimming, upper body and core development, sports, and team building exercises. This course may be repeatable up to 8 times, once a semester for 4 years.
Repeatable up to 8 credits.

- Demonstrate proper Army physical fitness standards for standardized, uniform stretching and exercising
- Demonstrate proper drill and ceremony procedures in order to prepare a group for Army standardized stretching and exercising
- Execute to Army standard the proper technique to perform and complete the Army Physical Fitness Test
- Execute to Army standard the proper procedures to conduct and grade to standard, the Army Physical Fitness Test.
- Receive life-long physical fitness habits
MSL 201 Leadership and Ethics: 3 Credits (2 Lec, 1 Lab)
PREREQUISITE: MSL 101 and MSL 102. (F) Focus on leadership and ethics. An understanding of how to build teams, influence, communicate, decision making, creative problem solving, planning and organizing. Laboratory component is required which includes physical fitness training, and other outdoor skills

MSL 202 Army Doctrine and Decision Making: 3 Credits (2 Lec, 1 Lab)
PREREQUISITE: MSL 102. (Sp) The course begins with analytical techniques, creative thinking skills, and the Army problem-solving process related to situations leaders face when making decisions. TLPs and OPORD will lead Cadets to an understanding of Army Doctrine and Symbology. Squad tactics will be covered in classes on Unified Land Operations, Offensive Operations, and Defensive Operations. Cadets are then required to apply their knowledge outside the classroom in a hands-on, performance-oriented environment during a weekly lab facilitated by MSL III Cadets and supervised by Cadre

PREREQUISITE: Consent of Professor of Military Science Practical application of basic knowledge required of an army officer. (F) Subject matter parallels 100 and 200 level courses. Satisfies prerequisites for advanced course in lieu of the basic course

MSL 205 American Military History: 3 Credits (3 Lec)
(F, Sp) The study of the evolution of the American Military, with concentration on the evolution of the American military within the context of national historical development, specifically with regard to industrialization, national security, and the United States' evolving international role and policies. Study of significant battles throughout our history of warfare which includes either an in-person or virtual battlefield tour.

MSL 291 Special Topics: 1-4 Credits ()
PREREQUISITE: None required but some may be determined necessary by each offering department. Courses not required in any curriculum for which there is a particular one-time need, or given on a trial basis to determine acceptability and demand before requesting a regular course number. -

PREREQUISITE: Consent of instructor and approval of department head. (F, Sp) Directed research and study on an individual basis. -

MSL 301 Training Management and the Warfighting Functions: 3 Credits (2 Lec, 1 Lab)
PREREQUISITE: MSL 101, MSL 102, MSL 201, and MSL 202. (F) An academically challenging course where Cadets will analyze, evaluate, and relate the fundamentals of Army Leadership, the Profession, Army Values and Ethics, Personal Development, and small unit tactics at the platoon level. At the conclusion of this course, Cadets will be capable of planning, coordinating, navigating, motivating, and leading a squad and platoon in the execution of a mission during a classroom PE, a Leadership Lab, or during a Field Training Exercise (FTX). Cadets will write peer evaluations and receive feedback on their abilities as a leader and how to improve those leader skills that can further develop into a successful officer. This course includes reading assignments, homework assignments, small group assignments, briefings, case studies, practical exercises, a mid-term exam, and a final exam. Cadets will receive systematic and specific feedback on leader attributes, values, and core leader competencies from the instructor, other ROTC Cadre, and MS IV Cadets who will assist in the evaluation

PREREQUISITE: MSL 301. (Sp) This course focuses on applied leadership in small unit operations. It is an academically challenging course where you will study, practice, and apply the fundamentals of direct level leadership and small unit tactics at the platoon level. At the conclusion of this course, you will be capable of planning, coordinating, navigating, motivating, and leading a platoon in the execution of a mission. It includes a Lab per week, using peer (MS III) facilitation overseen by MS IVs, supervised by ROTC Cadre

PREREQUISITE: MSL 302. (F) Enrollment restricted to successful completion of MSL 301 and MSL 302 and the Professor of Military Science's approval. Practical exercise in tactical, technical, and administrative duties common to all branches of the Army. Development of leadership and the ability to function effectively in small unit operations
MSL 401 The Army Officer: 3 Credits (2 Lec, 1 Lab)
PREREQUISITE: MSL 302. (F) Focuses on the institutional development of the Army Officer. The course will challenge you to develop knowledge, skill, and the ability to plan, prepare, execute, and assess operations while functioning as a team member. You will also learn about Army programs that support subordinate and self-development, performance evaluations, values and ethics, career planning, and legal responsibilities

PREREQUISITE: MSL 401. (Sp) Completes the Army’s BOLC-A curriculum to prepare cadets to be lieutenants. Cadets will examine two broad topics during the course: Multi-Domain Operations and the responsibilities of Company Grade Officers. Cadets will continue to plan, prepare, execute, and assess operations while functioning as a member of a team whiling practicing oral and written communication skills
