(F) An elementary level course designed to help students acquire basic proficiency in communicating within culturally significant contexts. An integrated approach to teaching language skills with emphasis on vocabulary acquisition and basic grammatical structures.
FRCH 102D Elementary French II: 3 Credits (3 Lec)
PREREQUISITE: FRCH 101 or equivalent, or two years of high school French. (Sp) This course builds upon the foundation established in 101. Greater emphasis is placed upon oral and written expression. Reading and discussions are designed to increase comprehension of more linguistically complex texts and more conceptually complex cultural issues

FRCH 105 Accelerated Elementary French I and II: 3 Credits (3 Lec)
PREREQUISITE: Previous study of French. An accelerated version of FRCH101 and FRCH102D in a single semester for students who have some background in French or another Romance language but who are not currently prepared for FRCH 102D or FRCH 201. Designed to help students acquire basic proficiency in communicating within culturally significant contexts. (F) Intensive, methodical review of grammar and syntax combined with the integrated development of proficiency in the four language skills. Expansion of cultural knowledge and functional vocabulary through intermediate readings and discussions. Increased emphasis on written communication

By reading, discussing, and acting out scenes of famous plays, students will improve pronunciation, intonation, fluency, communicative skills as well as problem solving and critical thinking skills

PREREQUISITE: FRCH 202D. Fifth semester French language course designed to strengthen Intermediate level language skills. The course will introduce students to Francophone literature and culture. Application of language skills in discussions and explications of selected readings

Course Learning Outcomes
1. Intermediate Mid in speaking on the ACTFL proficiency scale. The ACTFL scale measures a speaker's proficiency in the language. The scale includes five levels (Novice, Intermediate, Advanced, Superior, and Distinguished), most of which have sublevels (Low, Mid, and High). Using this scale, students' oral proficiency is constantly assessed throughout the semester through in-class oral activities and assignments. Final assessment is done using the Oral Proficiency Interview at the end of the semester.
2. Development of Advanced level skills in speaking, reading, and writing on the ACTFL scale. Inherent to strengthening Intermediate level skills in speaking is the development of Advanced level skills in order to lay the groundwork for moving students along the proficiency scale. And Intermediate level speakers can usually read and write at higher levels.
3. Basic understanding of Francophone culture. This is a qualitative assessment that will be quantified through the evaluation of content exams and written assignments.
FRCH 305 Histoire Civilisation: 3 Credits (3 Lec)
PREREQUISITE: FRCH 202D Survey of French culture from the middle ages to modern era; focus on historical, artistic, literary, and social developments. Taught in French
FRCH 306IH French: From Reflection to Rev: 3 Credits (3 Lec)
Reading and discussion of selected major works from the eighteenth century. All reading and discussions are in English. Majors may be required to do some work in French.

PREREQUISITE: FRCH 201D. Intensive conversation coupled with a practical study of French phonetics and contrastive comparison with English for teaching application. Various levels of the spoken language from slang to formal speech

PREREQUISITE: FRCH 202D. Study of several fine French films and the literary works upon which they were based. Emphasis is on the transformation of written text into image. Taught in French
