CTS in Phlebotomy

The Phlebotomy Certificate of Technical Studies (CTS) is designed to teach the technical and procedural aspects of basic phlebotomy, including collection of blood specimens and venipuncture.  This program includes theory and hands-on instruction and will teach students the concepts of phlebotomy and infection control, legal issues in healthcare, introduction to human anatomy and physiology, phlebotomy equipment and supplies, and phlebotomy procedures. Successful Phlebotomy CTS recipients will be prepared to take a Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam. 

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Recognize human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and terminology related to phlebotomy procedures.
  • Describe the blood tubes, their additives, and their use in the medical laboratory.
  • Demonstrate the correct procedure and order of a blood draw utilizing various venipuncture equipment.
  • Demonstrate collection of non-blood specimens and tests.
  • Prepare and document patient medical records and specimens per accreditation and regulatory standards.
  • Practice infection control and safety protocols in healthcare clinical and laboratory settings.
  • Communicate professionally with patients and healthcare team in office and clinical settings.
