CJLE 105  Police Patrol Procedures: 3 Credits (3 Lec)

(Su) Law Enforcement student or permission from instructor required. This course is an overview to public safety and the history of law enforcement in the American context. It also includes the major operations and functions of contemporary law enforcement alongside practical exercises and insights into interacting with diverse populations.

CJLE 106  Basic Police Firearms Training: 2 Credits (2 Lab)

(Su) Law Enforcement majors or permission from instructor required. This course gives prospective law enforcement officers the foundational training necessary to safely and effectively use firearms. Students learn the relevant laws and statues governing firearms and use of force, the basic components of firearms, and how to operate them.

  1. Identify the basic components of a handgun and rifle;
  2. Describe relevant Montana laws and statutes regarding firearms;
  3. Explain U.S. Supreme Court decisions regarding use of force and deadly force;
  4. Demonstrate proficiency in the handling of a firearm;

  6. Demonstrate the safe use of a firearm.

CJLE 130  Practical Scenarios for Law Enforcement: 2 Credits (2 Lab)

(Su) Law Enforcement majors or permission from instructor. This course provides students with tactics and approaches relevant to potential law enforcement scenarios, with a focus on conducting emergency responses, building searches, vehicle stops, and DUI detection and processing. Students gain practical experience given scenarios that require different tactics.

  1. Explain the history of Public Safety Officer Standards Training (POST), the duties and authority of council and staff, and the code of ethics that govern public safety officer standards.
  2. Describe the main tactics that law enforcement officers utilize when conducting emergency response, building searches, vehicle stops, and DUI detection and processing.
  3. Apply the appropriate law enforcement field tactics to practical scenarios based on a wide range of situational elements.

CJLE 140  Patrol Operations: 3 Credits (1 Lec, 2 Lab)

(Su) Law Enforcement students only. This course provides an introduction to the patrol methods and techniques used by law enforcement officers. Types of patrols, their functions, and types of calls while on patrol are emphasized. The use of a patrol vehicle is also emphasized.

  1. Describe a patrol area and the type of information law enforcement officers must identify.
  2. Identify suspicious activities and the correct methods for responding to service calls and suspicious activities.
  3. Describe the dynamics of police vehicle operation, including proper steering, backing, braking, turning, and parking.
  4. Operate a patrol vehicle and demonstrate best practices in radio operation.
  5. Demonstrate the appropriate response to various patrol-related scenarios, including effective communication through verbal or written reports.

CJLE 150  Life Saving Skills: 1 Credits (1 Lec)

(F) Law Enforcement majors or permission from instructor. This course covers a range of life-saving techniques and practices necessary for effective law enforcement work. The course covers life-saving skills law enforcement officers can utilize during specific occupational situations as well as to ensure their own safety and well-being.

  1. Explain basic first aid; Identify catastrophic bleeding and model appropriate actions to prevent further blood loss.
  2. Explain effective CPR and AED techniques; demonstrate techniques on adult and child-sized mannikins.
  3. Recognize signs and symptoms of mental illness and crisis situations and select an appropriate response and/or referral to a more relevant agency.
  4. Describe the most common ways that law enforcement officers are injured or killed on the job and best practices to minimize risk.

CJLE 160  Communications for Public Safety: 1 Credits (1 Lec)

(Su) Law Enforcement students or permission from instructor. This course covers communication in law enforcement and public safety from several angles, with a focus on making ethical communication decisions. Students will learn written communication skills for report writing and verbal communication skills for investigations, de-escalation, negotiation, and court testimony.

  1. Demonstrate thoughtful and ethical law enforcement communication that exhibits an understanding of issues related to encountering diverse populations
  2. Appraise a public safety situation and employ appropriate de-escalation and communication techniques.
  3. Prepare field notes and police report examples that are clear, accurate, and complete.
  4. Summarize the contents of field notes or reports in simulated court testimonies.

CJLE 170  Montana Criminal Code: 2 Credits (2 Lec)

(Su) Law Enforcement students only or consent of instructor required. This course provides an overview of the criminal code for the State of Montana. Students learn key concepts, definitions, and specific details about some of the most commonly used offenses in the criminal code.

  1. Define the core terms and elements of the Montana Criminal Code.
  2. Apply Montana Criminal Code definitions and elements to hypothetical situations including collaboration with Tribal Law.
  3. Differentiate between various traffic offenses and how to document evidence towards those offenses.
  4. Describe the statutes and case laws that govern the questioning and placement of juveniles.
  5. Describe the elements of the various Montana impaired driving offenses.

CJLE 180  Health and Wellness in Everyday Policing: 2 Credits (2 Lec)

(F) Law Enforcement majors or permission from instructor. This course is designed around issues related to fostering healthy outcomes for both law enforcement officers and their families. Specific modules focus on work-life balance, physical and mental health, and resiliency for a high-stress occupation.

  1. Examine techniques and approaches that can be utilized to foster work-life balance and maintain health and wellness of law enforcement officers. 
  2. Recognize the role that community connection, diversity, and cultural awareness plays in law enforcement. 
  3. Describe the most common ways that law enforcement officers are injured or killed on the job and best practices to minimize risk.
  4. Describe the range of stress, trauma, and mental health concerns a law enforcement officer and their family may experience; identify healthy methods to process and address these occupational stressors.

CJLE 209  Criminal Investigation: 3 Credits (2 Lec, 1 Lab)

(Su) Law Enforcement students only or consent of instructor required. This course provides an overview of the broad scope of criminal investigation with a focus on interviews and interrogations, crime scene management, and evidence collection. Successful students will learn appropriate investigative tactics given a range of potential circumstances and encounters.

  1. Identify the different aspects of crime scene investigation as it relates to law enforcement.
  2. Demonstrate proper evidence collection and preservation methods.
  3. Identify and practice current protocols in crime scene analysis, investigation, and preservation of evidence.
  4. Demonstrate effective interviewing and interrogation skills for law enforcement officers to use in crime scenes, including patrol and investigations.

CJLE 212  Defensive Tactics: 2 Credits (2 Lab)

(Su) Law Enforcement students only or consent of instructor required. This course provides an overview and specific training in defensive tactics for law enforcement officers. This includes searches, control and survival strategies, and the appropriate use of chemical agents and weapons. Students will employ these defensive tactics in hypothetical practical scenarios.

  1. Explain survival tactics commonly used by law enforcement officers and assess when they should be used; Select the appropriate tactic and tools when presented with a variety of hypothetical confrontational situations.
  2. Demonstrate control principles including tactical handcuffing, pressure point control tactics, joint locks and more.
  3. Demonstrate defensive counterstrikes.
  4. Demonstrate effective retention and disarming of impact weapons including handguns.

CJLE 298  Internship: 6 Credits (6 Other)

(F) Law Enforcement students only or consent of instructor required. This course gives students 20+ hours/week of experience in the daily operations of law enforcement agencies. Monitored experiences will include observing and applying best practices in law enforcement environments while utilizing skills and knowledge acquired in previous law enforcement courses.
