HMED 140  Introduction to Health Professions: 1 Credits (1 Lec)

This course will assist students in exploring various departments at MSU and choosing a major that best fits their passions, career goals, and educational interests. This course will also provide an opportunity to explore the breadth of health care professions.

  1. Understand the components of a competitive application to health professional school,
  2. Refer to contact information for the Health Professions Advisor and recognize the role of this individual in the application process,
  3. Better understand the diversity of majors available at Montana State University,
  4. Contact advisors and faculty in any of several academic departments, programs, or colleges,
  5. Explore the integration of health professional school pre-requisite courses and degree requirements for several majors,
  6. Evaluate the academic/training requirements for many health professions,
  7. Explore the scope of practice for many health professions,
  8. Reflect on interactions with academic representatives and health professionals to better inform their own goals.

HMED 240  UG Clinical Observation: 1 Credits (1 Lec)

PREREQUISITE: GPA greater than 3.0, consent of instructor. This course will provide fundamentals in health care professionalism through discussions of professionalism, HIPAA, medical ethics, and case studies. Following successful completion of the didactic component of the course, students will participate in a series of clinical observation rotations. Offered by Health Professions Advising

  2. Understand professionalism and how it applies in the heath care system,
  3. Evaluate the role of HIPAA,
  4. Discuss ethical decision-making and strategies employed is clinical scenarios,
  5. Participate in a case study to better understand the complexity of the health care team,
  6. Gain a greater understanding of health insurance/coverage programs and policies, such as Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA.
  7. Explore regional and national statistics and challenges in terms of health care needs, policies and providers.

HMED 340  Introduction to Dentistry: 1 Credits (1 Lec)

PREREQUISITE: CHMY 141 and CHMY 143, and BIOB 260; at least junior standing, GPA >3.0 or consent of instructor. This course is ideal for students who want to confirm an interest in a career in dentistry. An overview of tooth anatomy, development and vocabulary will position students to better understand the various specialties presented at the clinics of community dentists.   2. Compare and contrast general dentistry and dental specialties,
  3. Gain an understanding of the scope of practice among several dental specialties,
  4. Explore the role of business administration in dentistry,
  5. Gain exposure, through hands-on activities, to some techniques used in dental practice,
  6. Become familiar with the dental clinic, equipment, and costs,
  7. Gain insight into the strengths of several dental schools.

HMED 440  Clinical Observation: 2 Credits (2 Lab)

PREREQUISITE: CHMY 141 and CHMY 143, and BIOB 260; at least junior standing, GPA >3.0 and consent of instructor. This shadowing experience will provide students with the opportunity to observe providers in a clinical setting and position them to meet, in part, the requirements for application to health professional school. Offered by Health Professions Advising
Repeatable up to 4 credits.

  6. Record observations that compare and contrast the scope of practice among several types of health care professionals,
  7. Reflect in short narratives on the congruence of their personal goals and their experiences in the clinical environment,
  8. Practice the writing structure that will be part of a successful application to health professional school.

HMED 540  Clinical Practicum: 1 Credits (1 Lec)

A practical course for students going into the medical field to observe and learn about the services provided by different health care professionals at various stages of patient care.
Repeatable up to 2 credits.

  3. Understand the basic data reporting structure in hospitals and from hospitals to patients and oversight organizations,

  5. Gain awareness of the breadth of the health care team,
  6. Meet the minimum clinical observation requirements for application to most health professional schools,
  7. Reflect on discussions with health care providers regarding the practice of medicine and work-life balance,
  8. Record observations that compare and contrast the scope of practice among several types of health care professionals,
  9. Reflect in short narratives on the congruence of their personal goals and their experiences in the clinical environment,
  10. Practice the writing structure that will be part of a successful application to health professional school.

HMED 575  Professional Paper and Project: 1-6 Credits (1-6 Other)

PREREQUISITE: Graduate standing and acceptance into MS in Health Sciences program. (F, Sp) M.S. students conduct a scholarly project under the mentorship of a faculty member
Repeatable up to 6 credits.

HMED 592  Independent Study: 1-4 Credits (1-4 Other)

Designed for medical students required to complete additional study related to the required blocks or threads offered during the pre-clinical foundation phase of the School of Medicine curriculum. Intended for students in remedial or extended programs to master fund of knowledge.
Repeatable up to 20 credits.

PREREQUISITE: Graduate standing or consent of instructor. Topics include current issues in health care delivery, review of medical literature, exploration of ethical issues in medicine, and application strategies
