MBEH 294 Careers in Environmental Health: 1 Credits (1 Other)
(Not planning to offer at this time but would like to retain course number) Introduction to educational, internship and career opportunities in the environmental health track in LRES, e.g. environmental public health, occupational safety and health, food service management, the water sector, epidemiology and research. Students will gain knowledge, skills and certifications which will increase their preparation and competitiveness for research and environmental health internships and jobs, by completing in-person trainings, e.g. in biosafety, chemical safety, respiratory protection, hearing protection and food safety. Field trip(s) included, with transportation provided.
View Course Outcomes:
- Be able to describe how a degree in microbiology (or other science discipline) applies to various career options in environmental health, by having met and heard from diverse environmental health professionals in occupational safety and health, environmental public health, food service management, the water sector, epidemiology and environmental health research.
- Have gained knowledge, skills and certifications which will increase their preparation and competitiveness for research and environmental public health internships and jobs, by completing in-person trainings in biosafety, chemical safety, bloodborne pathogens, respiratory protection, hearing protection and food safety.
- Be familiar with environmental health internship opportunities and funding for them, by having met and heard from internship mentors from MSU, the County Health Department and the State of Montana as well as current student interns.
- Have gained insight into municipal water treatment processes and jobs in the water sector, through a field trip to tour the Bozeman Water Treatment plant.
MBEH 490R Undergraduate Research: 1-6 Credits (1-6 Other)
(On demand with student proposal.) Directed undergraduate research/creative activity which may culminate in a research paper, journal article, or undergraduate thesis. Course will address responsible conduct of research. May be repeated.
Repeatable up to 12 credits.

- Thinkers and Problem Solvers: Students will be able to identify a research question, develop and carry out a method of gathering data/information to address their question, analyze and/or assess their data, report their results, discuss the significance of their findings and draw conclusions.
- Effective Communicators: Students will be able to communicate their research findings. They will create a written report, powerpoint presentation and/or develop and present a research poster at the MSU Student Research Celebration and/or a relevant conference. Students who do community-engaged research will also share their results with their community partners and other community stakeholders through venues recommended by their community partners. Some outstanding students will additionally become co-authors on publications.
- Citizens: As an environmental health majors, students will act ethically and with integrity in applying their disciplinary knowledge to address and further our understanding of an environmental health issue of importance to human and ecosystem health. They will also complete the CITI Responsible Conduct of Research or Human Subjects Research certification.
MBEH 492 Independent Study: 1-3 Credits (1-3 Other)
PREREQUISITE: Junior standing, consent of instructor, and approval of department head. (As needed - initiated by student and mentor.) Directed research and study on an individual basis
Repeatable up to 6 credits.

- Demonstrate the ability to conduct independent research, synthesize relevant literature, and critically analyze findings related to the chosen topic.
- Present findings clearly and effectively through written reports and/or oral presentations, showcasing an understanding of the topic's significance and applications.
MBEH 495 Field Project: 1-4 Credits (1-4 Other)
PREREQUISITE: Consent of instructor and department head. Research and field experience in some aspect of environmental health science
Repeatable up to 4 credits.

MBEH 498 Internship: 2-12 Credits (2-12 Other)
PREREQUISITE: Junior standing, consent of instructor, and approval of department head. (Internships initated by student application process.) An individual assignment arranged with an agency, business, or other organization to provide guided experience in the field
Repeatable up to 12 credits.
